Marcus Lewis helps high schoolers turn applications that read like everyone else's into cases that make admissions readers stop scanning and start paying attention.
Marcus Lewis helps high schoolers turn applications that read like everyone else’s into cases that make admissions readers stop scanning and start paying attention. He has worked with roughly two hundred and fifty students across thirteen years, and the results cover the full map: every Ivy League school, twenty-plus admits to the University of Toronto, placements at Oxford and Cambridge, and a range from UC campuses to liberal arts colleges to Big Ten flagships. He is not the consultant who tells you what you want to hear. He is the one who tells you what is actually going on with your application.
Marcus came to this work through a winding path that makes him better at it. He studied at the University of Minnesota, earned a master’s in American Studies from Columbia, worked in production in Los Angeles, worked for a television producer at NBC in New York, and spent two years as an associate director of college consulting at an international firm. He also won a game on Jeopardy!, hosts a monthly trivia night where he writes his own questions, and builds crossword puzzles. The thread connecting all of it is language — how it works, how it persuades, how to make eighteen-year-olds sound like themselves on a page instead of like every other applicant in the pile.
That obsession with language shows up in the work. Marcus is a relentless copy editor who teaches grammar rules while fixing essays — not because grammar is glamorous, but because sloppy writing is the fastest way to signal that you didn’t care enough. He also tutors SAT, ACT, PSAT, AP exams, and a half-dozen other standardized tests, which means he sees a student’s academic profile from multiple angles most consultants never get. His school-list philosophy is conservative and aspirational: he won’t inflate your likely list to make you feel good, and he won’t talk you out of a reach that has a real case behind it.
Marcus works especially well with international applicants navigating unfamiliar systems, students from oversubscribed countries who need sharper differentiation, ESL speakers whose written English doesn’t yet match their thinking, creative and arts-focused applicants, students with lower GPAs or test scores who need a smarter strategy, neurodiverse students, reapplicants, and the high-achieving perfectionist who has rewritten the same paragraph eleven times and still isn’t saying anything.
Marcus takes a small number of clients each cycle. He will find the thing in your background that you underestimated, build a case around it, and fix your comma splices while he’s at it. The process is not gentle — but the students who come out the other side agree it was worth it.
