JD Deal helps students who know they have something to say but haven't figured out how to say it yet.

JD Deal helps students who know they have something to say but haven’t figured out how to say it yet — the ones whose experiences feel too ordinary to matter, whose stories don’t come with built-in drama, and who need someone in their corner before they need someone cracking the whip. JD’s gift is making the mundane feel miraculous: pulling genuine passion out of the details a student would have glossed over and turning them into the thing that makes a reader pause.

JD knows what it feels like to navigate this process without a map. A first-generation, low-income student from Iowa, JD earned a BA from Harvard in Classics and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies with a Secondary in Education. He came up through LEDA — the Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America — and received seventy hours of intensive ACT preparation before arriving on campus. At Harvard, he mentored first-year students on public service projects through the SPARK program, tutored middle and high school students at the Ed Portal, built an eighth-grade English curriculum from scratch, and spent nearly a year teaching SAT prep. He also helped lead Harvard’s fossil fuel divestment campaign — the university eventually committed. The resume says Harvard. The energy says someone who will meet you exactly where you are.

At the firm, JD is trusted across the roster. Senior consultants request him as a second mentor and auditor on their own clients’ applications — reviewing essays, identifying narrative gaps, and sharpening positioning across cycles. He brings deep fluency in financial aid — FAFSA, CSS Profile, scholarship strategy — and can walk families through the full process when the system is unfamiliar. He coaches SAT and ACT preparation and tutors in English, psychology, US history, and classics.

JD works best with students who respond to warmth rather than pressure — first-generation applicants, humanities-oriented thinkers, social justice-minded students, and anyone who needs a consultant who listens before they advise. He is especially effective with students who find it hard to come out of their shells: gentle, disarming, and genuinely interested in what makes them tick.

If you want the sharpest thinking in the least intimidating package, JD’s already in your corner.
