Emory University

Despite its hot Atlanta locale, the best word for Emory University is… cool. Any school that has President Jimmy Carter and world-famous novelist Sir Salman Rushdie teaching classes has something going for it. With its highly demanding academic system, high-tech research facilities, and socially-conscious student body, it’s easy to see why Emory is always near the top of the college rankings.

Features

Serving Society

In recognition of Emory’s commitment to community service, service-learning, and civic engagement, Emory received the 2008 Presidential Award for General Community Service, the highest federal recognition given to colleges and universities for community service. A large percentage of Emory students participate in Volunteer Emory, a program that facilitates service opportunities and social justice work. Students can participate in weekly service trip programs, large scale service days, engaged learning courses, and a ton of other ways to help—sometimes even earning course credit at the same time.

Financial Need

Emory says they are committed to meeting 100% of students’ demonstrated financial aid and they mean it. 68% of undergrads at Emory receive financial aid, and Emory made it to both Princeton Review and Kiplinger’s Best Value lists, too. Sweet deal.

Research Funding

Emory generates more research funding than any other university in Georgia. In the 2012 fiscal year alone, Emory researchers received a whopping $518.6 million from external funding—their third straight year receiving over half a billion dollars in research funding. And it’s no wonder with all the excellent research Emory conducts in areas ranging from organ transplants to AIDS. For students with research interests, Emory is a great place with lots of resources and support.
