Should I Attend a T14 or a Lower Ranked School with Scholarship?

Attend the T14 if you genuinely want BigLaw or federal clerkship-style outcomes and your numbers make it likely, because those markets recruit like an airport hub: most flights leave from a few gates. Take the scholarship school if your target job is local/regional, public interest with LRAP coverage, or anything where graduating with low debt buys you options and sleep. Quick checks: look up each school’s ABA 509 and NALP data and compare (1) BigLaw+FC placement, (2) median private-sector salary, and (3) geographic concentration; then run a real debt model using the school’s COA, your scholarship conditions (watch those GPA/class-rank cliffs), and a conservative post-tax monthly payment. If the T14 path requires betting your future on “I’ll be in the top third” or “PSLF will definitely work out,” you’re not making a plan, you’re buying a lottery ticket.

You’re not choosing a school, you’re choosing a risk profile. The T14 is a higher-upside, higher-fixed-cost portfolio: it diversifies your outcomes across markets and firms, but it locks you into needing a certain income floor. The scholarship is a lower-upside, lower-burn-rate startup: fewer national exits, but way more runway if life happens or your interests shift. Ask yourself one uncomfortable question: would you still be happy with your choice if you miss the dream outcome by one notch (not BigLaw, but midlaw; not DA, but government staff; not NYC, but your home state)? If that “one-notch miss” makes the debt feel like a collar, take the money. If the scholarship school makes the dream outcome structurally unlikely, pay for the gate that actually has flights.
