Merit Aid for Out of State Students at UVA?

UVA offers very limited merit aid overall, and for out-of-state students it’s even rarer: the University Awards (UVA’s main merit scholarships) are competitive, typically require a separate scholarship application through UVA’s Scholarship Hub, and many awards target Virginians, specific majors, or named donor criteria rather than “OOS merit” broadly. The biggest merit-type dollars most applicants have heard of are the Jefferson Scholars (full-ride, nomination-based, extremely selective) and the Walentas Scholars Program in the McIntire School of Commerce (full tuition for a small cohort once you’re in Commerce). There are also departmental and school-based scholarships (Engineering, Arts & Sciences, etc.), but think “patchwork” not “discount sticker price,” and many are one-time or modest. Bottom line: if you’re banking on UVA to bid for you with big merit money, you’re playing a low-odds hand.

Here’s the part that matters more than any scholarship name: UVA doesn’t need to bribe you to attend, so your plan can’t depend on it. Run a quick gut-check: if UVA gives you $0 merit, is it still a “yes” at out-of-state cost after four years, not just year one? If that answer makes your stomach do a little flip, shift your strategy from “win merit” to “control risk”: prioritize schools where your stats are above their median and merit is baked into their enrollment model, and treat UVA as the reach/love letter. Apply to every scholarship you can without turning your application into a scavenger hunt, but don’t confuse “I really want UVA” with “UVA will pay me for wanting it.”
