James Burns helps MBA applicants with serious careers and serious goals build applications that match. In five years of consulting, he has worked with roughly thirty clients — and nearly all of them have landed at M7 or equivalent programs. Wharton. Stanford. Harvard. Booth. Kellogg. LBS. Darden. The list is not long because the bar is low. It is long because the hit rate is that high. He is not the consultant who will spend the first call getting to know your hobbies. He is the one who will read your resume, see what is missing from your narrative, and tell you exactly how to fix it.
His own resume explains why he can do that. James graduated from West Point with a double major in Economics and German, then spent more than eight years as an Apache attack helicopter pilot and company commander in the United States Army, with combat deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, and South Korea. After the military, he earned an MBA from Stanford, worked in private equity at Blackstone Tactical Opportunities focused on aerospace and defense, served as a fellow at the Hoover Institution analyzing Department of Defense budgets, and joined McKinsey in digital analytics. He spent two years on a religious mission in East Germany learning fluent German. The through-line is not variety — it is a pattern of operating in high-stakes environments where clarity and precision are not optional.
That pattern defines how he consults. James works at the speed of relevance: no hedging, no padding, no wasted sessions. He co-creates the application narrative with the client rather than drafting in isolation, and his cross-industry perspective — military operations, private equity, management consulting, defense policy — means he can read a nontraditional career and see the connective logic faster than most. He serves as a Stanford MBA admissions ambassador, which means he knows what the admissions side of the table is selecting for and what it is filtering out. His dual-degree fluency covers JD/MBA, MBA/MPH, and MD/MBA combinations.
James works best with military veterans transitioning to business school, career-switchers whose professional arcs need architectural clarity, STEM-heavy candidates whose impact is real but whose storytelling is not, older applicants, first-generation candidates, and high achievers who already know what they want and need someone sharp enough to pressure-test the plan.
James does not ease people into the process. He meets you where the work is, moves fast, and expects you to keep up. The applicants who get the most out of working with him are the ones who already know what they want — and need someone with the resume and the judgment to make the case bulletproof.
