Essay Analysis: MIT Sloan School of Management 2018-19

MIT Sloan has chosen to stick with last year’s prompts, in particular the rather tricky cover letter “essay.” The challenge here is that MIT’s adcom has a very precise notion of what they are looking for–and it’s not what you would normally write for a professional cover letter, OR what most other MBA programs are looking for.

Fortunately, MIT does a good job of describing its particular approach to admissions. If you read the prompts and their FAQ closely, you’ll begin to see a pattern in the way this adcom thinks. Most notably, your post-MBA goals do not matter:

“We do not evaluate you on why you want an MBA or what you intend to do with it afterwards…”

The adcom also has very specific criteria for resumes, and their video prompt doesn’t allow for much creativity. Nothing in this application is radically outside the norm, but it’s important to make sure you’re following all the rules. Here are our thoughts on how best to approach MIT:
