Essay Analysis: Columbia Business School 2018-19

Harvard may have fired the starting pistol for the 2018-19 season, but Columbia’s not far behind!
CBS, a perennial early bird when it comes to prompt announcements, released this year’s application last week. They’ve shaken things up in an exciting way, changing two of their three questions.
Long story short: CBS is placing less emphasis on applicant’s personal interests, and more emphasis on teamwork.
We’re particularly big fans of prompt three, which should force applicants to think about teamwork like an MBA student should.
It’s also worth reflecting on what CBS cut: The adcom clearly didn’t feel like they were getting what they needed from last year’s Essay 2 (how applicants would allocate their time at CBS) or Essay 3 (what are you most passionate about/what would you do with a free day). Here’s our detailed take:
