Columbia (CBS) Essay Analysis 2019-2020

June 05, 2019 :: Admissionado Team

Coming in second in our essay analysis series, Columbia Business School recently announced their deadlines and new topics for two of their three essays.

The CBS adcom has always been focused on the traditional MBA applicant themes: career goals, why our school, etc. In prior years, they asked about these topics with slight CBS-specific embellishments (i.e. a video link in the prompt). This year, they’re just asking directly. Seriously, it doesn’t get more straightforward than “Why do you feel Columbia Business School is a good fit for you?” They’ve also added a simple “role model” question that would feel at home in any job interview.

It’s an unimaginative set of prompts. One could say that they are “easy” compared to the open-ended essays at HBS or Stanford GSB, but that misses the fact that MBA admissions is a competitive process. An “easy” essay topic simply means applicants will have to work extra hard to stand out. Let’s dive in!
