Will I work with one consultant or a team? What is the difference between an editor and a consultant?

July 21, 2023 :: jessica

We have found that a team-based approach to application consulting is highly effective so you’ll be working with (1) a consultant and (2) an editorial specialist.

A consultant, who is one of our MBA experts, works closely with clients to develop a customized strategic approach tailored to their profile. They focus on the “what” of the application, including how to market the client’s profile to the admissions committee and which schools to apply to.

An editorial specialist, on the other hand, is a seasoned writer who addresses the “how” of the application. Under the guidance of the main consultant, these specialists provide in-depth analysis, feedback, and actionable suggestions to improve the writing through multiple edit rounds. They specialize in crafting compelling stories for the admissions committee. However, they do not provide strategic guidance on adjusting goals or selecting schools. For an idea of their work, you can refer to our Edit Sample Guide, which goes beyond grammar, spelling, and polishing to enhance the dynamic nature of the stories provided.

Each component of the process requires different skill sets: high-level strategy and granular writing coaching. While it is possible for someone to excel in one area but be average in the other, expecting a single person to handle both can lead to fatigue and diminished results, especially when working with multiple clients. Our split approach allows each specialist to remain fresh and focused, delivering optimal outcomes for every client. This innovative approach is rarely seen in the admissions consulting industry.
