NYU Stern

The Wall Street Prep School” NYU Stern’s MBA program is overwhelmingly finance-focused, not surprising given the NYC location and proximity to Wall Street, as well as the number of faculty members that work on The Street. Stern also offers solid options for two other big NYC industries: Consulting and Media.

The “Stern Curve”

This is a deflating grade curve applied to all core courses and to some advanced electives designed to encourage the risk-taking experience necessary in the business world. In Stern courses, about 25% in each class will receive A’s, about 40% will receive B’s, and the remainder of students will receive C’s or lower.

Entrepreneurs Challenge

Stern has now THREE annual prize-filled competitions designed to boost entrepreneurship in the school – the $75,000 New Venture Competition, the $100,000 Social Venture Competition, the $75,000 Technology Venture Competition. So if you think all they want is button-down finance guys, think again. Entrepreneurship is on the rise here.

The “Big Apple Advantage”

From a personal to a professional to a cultural perspective, NYU is extremely well connected with all the rich institutions that are based in New York.

Strong Evening and Weekend Program

Thanks to Stern’s unparalleled location (better even than that of Columbia), many successful professionals who are unable to leave their jobs for a full-time MBA join Stern for one of the top destinations for evening and weekend MBAs.

“Doing Business in…”

Stern offers unique one- to two-week intensive study abroad programs, which provide a mix of local faculty lectures, corporate visits, and government and business speakers.

Stern Consulting Corps (SCC)

SCC is designed to help Stern students to apply their business skills to prominent non-profit organizations in New York City through 10-week consulting engagements.

Ideal for Career Switchers

Through the Stern Industry Mentoring Initiative (IMI), you will be prepared to make that industry change you have always dreamt about (NYU currently offers mentoring in five industries: Consulting, Investment Banking, Marketing, Media & Entertainment, Sales & Trading). Just be cautious in focusing too much on career shifts in your application essays…

Admissionado Tips

Focus On Stern

If there’s one thing Stern doesn’t like, it’s playing second fiddle to the their (often higher-ranked) ivy league neighbors uptown, so make sure Stern knows that you are going there not just for the “NY experience,” but specifically for the “Stern experience.” They’ve also had traditionally TWO separate questions focusing on the Stern experience; so let’s take a hint, shall we? Stern is known to be MUCH more collaborative than CBS—show that you KNOW that. Stern has a strong community of “Sternies.” What does Columbia have? You get the idea…

Show The NYC Fit

Let’s be sure to show our fit with New York City. Especially for folks without much international background, NYC may be a bit…overwhelming. Show us that you have what it takes to survive—to thrive in the Big Apple.
