Located in between the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign, the University of Illinois is the highest ranked school in the state and is (in its own words) “dedicated to to its traditional excellence in in education, research, and public engagement.” U. Illinois is really an academic dreamer’s (or over-achiever’s) paradise, as graduates have won Nobel Prizes, Pulitzer Prizes, Guggenheim Fellowships, Tony Awards, and lots of other prestigious honors that their experiences at the school undoubtedly helped them achieve.
It is also home to the world’s largest public university library with an average of 1.1 million items circulated each year. Even if you’re not a reader, there’s got to be something there worth picking up! If academia isn’t your thing, there are over 1,000 on-campus organizations that include everything from the Rock Climbing Club to the Chinese Mahjong Club. Not to mention, the school boasts the largest Greek Life program in the world with 25% of the campus participating in it. In terms of athletics, the Fighting Illini compete in 20 Division I varsity sports and are part of the Big Ten Conference- which means a LOT of potential for sports scholarships and some of the most important March Madness basketball games of the season.
