Julia Hazen

From Mexico City to Minneapolis, Julia epitomizes the term ‘career switcher.’ She loves helping students turn their amazing life experiences into winning MBA applications.

Before earning her MBA from the Wharton School and her MA in International Studies from the Lauder Institute, Julia graduated from Brown University with a degree in economics and development studies. A do-gooder at heart, she spent 5 years working in international development across Latin America and Africa. From starting a social enterprise in Tanzania to working in microfinance in Nicaragua, her international experience showed her the unbelievable power of the private sector to transform the developing world. So, she brushed off her math skills and made the giant leap to pursue her joint MBA/MA at the Wharton School/Lauder Institute.

At Wharton, she led the Marketing Club, served as a Student Life Fellow, and organized a lot of karaoke parties for which she will forever be known for doing a mean cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. Following Wharton, she worked at General Mills in their brand management rotational program, working on iconic brands such as Pillsbury, Betty Crocker, and Progresso Soup. In search of a more entrepreneurial atmosphere (and some fancy snacks), she then joined a mid-size, private equity-backed organic food company as a marketing manager. 

She enjoys biking, hiking, skiing, and reading cheesy novels. She loves living in Minnesota (except in January and February) and can do a killer imitation of the Midwest accent, dontcha know.

As a non-traditional MBA student, Julia loves to learn about MBA candidate’s hopes and dreams and is passionate about helping people translate their experience into a compelling business school story.
