Cornell University

The bottom line is this: Cornell reminds us of the Michael Keaton film Multiplicity. On the one hand, the environment is rich with on-campus activities, well-rounded students, and a social student body. Yet on the other hand, students are known to work very hard, be somewhat competitive, and mourn their dreary weather, huge campus, and distance to, well, civilization…

Features

The Great Outdoors

It’s hard not to fall in love with Cornell’s beautiful scenery. Its deep gorges are legendary, and the sunset views from Libe Slope are unmatched. If that’s not enough for ya, the botanical garden at Cornell Plantations is the perfect place to curl up with a good (text)book.

Traditions

Cornell is famous for its long-standing traditions. Most notable: Slope Day, an annual celebration on Libe Slope (when spring finally arrives in Ithaca), with live music, food and the entire student body.

Academic Decentralization

Cornell has a total of 13 colleges that are largely autonomous. Each college operates its own admission and has its own academic standards, allowing students to concentrate on their particular areas of intellectual interest (and not all those pre-reqs). The only university-wide requirements for undergrads are a writing requirement, a swimming test (!), and a couple of physical education courses.
